The Canon Powershot A480 is the camera entry level in Canon's line up. It has fewer features than other models range. This has the advantage of keeping it easy to use and also maintaining low prices.

The good news is, despite the lower price tag, it is still able to take good quality photographs. I was very impressed by the sharpness of pictures taken at the Standard outdoor scenes. The PowerShot A480 will certainly other models of entry-a run for their money when it comes to sharpness. I also been impressed by the brightness and color photos, the camera produces.

For almost the work of the camera can focus far 1cm from the subject. This is closer than most cameras can manage, even those who are much more expensive. The quality of macro shots is very good to show detail.

As one might expect from the camera is not perfect in all respects. The LCD may be better in full light. Canon has used only 115,000 pixels to the screen. This is half the amount normally used, and this may well have contributed to make the screen difficult to see in brighter light. If you plan to reel off a few pictures using the flash of the PowerShot A480 will be significantly slow. Otherwise shutter delay and switch times are in line with similar devices.

In terms of size of the Powershot A480 is superior to 30 mm wide. This makes it a bit of a squeeze for mounting in a pocket. Although it does not really compare with some of the most elegant models available it looks pretty good to me. There are four color versions, blue, silver, black and blue.

This is a digital camera 10 megapixel with a 3.3x optical zoom. It is a specification standard enough for the price, although you may find other cameras now achieve little extra zoom compared to the PowerShot A480. Other features include face detection for portraits focusing more acute. Another more recent innovation to help with portraits is the red-eye correction. This occurs after the photo was taken. You can instruct the device to clean all eyes red itself or you can manually perform the task yourself. There is also a small number of color filters, you can use to create different effects. These include black and white and sepia.

Power is supplied by two AA batteries. The use of these batteries rather than the more common lithium-ion battery helps explain why the PowerShot A480 is a little larger in size than most digital cameras. Canon estimates you should be able to take about 200 shots before a standard set of batteries run out. Personally, I think it's looking on the bright side of things May be worth it and you budget for a set of rechargeable batteries to help minimize operating costs.

Canon is the only brand that I can consider providing more memory cards with their digital cameras. All other brands tend to build in the memory device. A 32MB card is supplied with the camera. It has enough room for a dozen shots before the card is full. As the SD of the device is also compatible with SDHC cards.

The PowerShot A480 was launched in February 2009. Other similar cameras introduced at this particular time Sony DSC W950 and the Olympus FE-5000. It may be worth checking machines as alternatives to the Powershot A480. The next step in Canon's line is The PowerShot A1100 IS. The camera is a little different from each other and the PowerShot A1100 IS also offers an image stabilizer.
