How exactly do I use the light meter in a digital camera? Am using an Olympus E-500?

I am a beginner digital photography and gained a half decent knowledge of many important concepts, for example. Barnacle white shutter speed, F values, etc., but I'm not sure how you light meter. I understand the concept of measuring the light but I'm not sure how to do it. Should I not simply the camera to where I want a meter or do I put pressure on the trigger or something. I know I'm half press the shutter to focus, I'm just not quite sure how the count comes to the equation. Thank you for any help.
